John Stamos says he tried to leave ‘Full House’ early on: ‘I hated that show’

(CNN) – John Stamos has spoken candidly about his time on the hit family sitcom “ Full House ,” and his comments might surprise you.
On last week’s episode of the talk show “ Hot Ones ,” Stamos, who starred on “Full House” from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s as Uncle Jesse, admitted he wasn’t too fond of the show at first, and even tried to leave it.
“I hated that show,” he said, recalling that he was initially pitched to be similar to “Bosom Buddies,” the short ‘80s comedy starring Peter Scolari and Tom Hanks, but “with a couple of kids in the background.”

Stamos added that, at the time, he felt like “the star” of the series and had a “big shot” attitude in the early stages of production, so when his co-star Jodie Sweetin, then just a child, upstaged him during the first reading, his ego took a bit of a hit.
“Jodie Sweetin, who plays Stephanie (Tanner), reads her lines and people are cracking up, I mean screaming,” Stamos said, adding, “I couldn’t even hear my lines, they were laughing at her so much, and I was kind of hunched over in my seat.”

She said she vividly remembers running out into the lobby to call her agent and say, “Get me off this fucking show!”
In the end, Stamos explained that with the help of his late co-star Bob Saget , and a little prodding from his agent, he decided to give it a try.

“I fought against it for a long time and finally said, ‘What am I doing?’ It is a beautiful series built with sweetness and kindness,” he said, adding that he came to the conclusion that “the central character was love” and that “we were the best representation of a loving family – not a normal family – and it was the new normal”.
“Full House” aired on ABC from 1987 to 1995. The sitcom followed Saget’s character Danny Tanner, a widower raising his three daughters with the help of Stamos’ “Uncle Jesse” Katsopolis and his friend Joey Gladstone, played by Dave Coulier.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen – whom Stamos recently admitted he tried to get fired from the series at first – starred opposite Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure as the three Tanner daughters. Lori Loughlin played Stamos’s wife, Becky.
Stamos also starred in “ Fuller House ,” Netflix’s reissue of the beloved series, which premiered in 2016 and ran for five seasons.
